Activity 3
Painting, using a “freestyle” technique, to create coloured, collage material
This activity creates a painted paper, which will be used later as a collage material. It also provides an opportunity for students to experiment with the painting technique of blending and applying their colour knowledge.
Curriculum content descriptions
Western Australian Curriculum
Artistic processes and techniques to explore visual conventions when making artworks: shape, colour, space and texture.
Australian Curriculum Version 8 Content Descriptions
Use materials, techniques and processes to explore visual conventions when making artworks (ACAVAM111).
Materials
Paintbrushes.
Acrylic paint – colours appropriate for the leaves from students’ natural environment.
For this example, yellow, green, cobalt blue, dark blue, purple, brown and black were used.
A3 cartridge paper and lead pencils to write name on back of paper. Washing up buckets.
Activity
Review last lesson’s artwork. Discuss the use of the painting technique, blending of green tones in a pattern down the page where students started with the lightest colour.
Discuss how the colours we painted with reminded us of leaves and how the leaves were different colours depending on where they were found. Sometimes leaves found on the bush or are grey, sometimes brown, bright lime green for young new leaves, and sometimes a mixture of reds and purples.
Discuss today’s lesson – similar to last week's where the focus was on blending colours, but today’s lesson is “freestyle”. There still needs to be evidence of blended colour. Our inspiration is all the beautiful colours leaves can be.
Demonstrate blending green tones freestyle. Essentially this is learning through play and experimentation, but keep the dialogue and actions on blending tones of green on the paper (no mixing palette, etc.).
Review how their workspace should be set up. Students start work.
Encourage experimentation of colour mixing and also of brush making and brush stroke across the paper.
Students to complete their “freestyle” blending, covering the entire A3 page.
Teacher Notes
This activity’s intention is to provide an opportunity for students to experiment and “play” independently, consider ways to blend paint colours and invent their own. It also allows for students to create a range of tones through mixing primary and secondary colours.
Time
For this documented project, Year 3 students required one 50-minute lesson.
