JamFactory

About

JamFactory in Adelaide, is a renowned centre for contemporary craft and design that has become a cornerstone of the local art scene. It embodies a vibrant fusion of gallery spaces and studios, where art is not just exhibited but also made. JamFactory’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation is evident in its support of diverse artistic practices, including those of Australian Aboriginal artists.

In recent exhibitions, JamFactory has highlighted significant contributions from Aboriginal artists, emphasising the role of traditional practices and narratives in contemporary art. The “Ernabella Arts: Ceramic Warka Wiṟu 20 Years-kutu” exhibition celebrates two decades of creative output from the Ernabella Arts Ceramic Studio, Australia’s oldest continuously running First Nations art centre. This exhibition not only showcases the extraordinary talents of the Anangu artists but also serves as a reflection on the evolution of the Ceramics Studio since 2003, demonstrating JamFactory’s deep engagement with Indigenous artistry.

Another notable exhibition, “Mudlirna,” by James Tylor, explores the living culture and design of the Kaurna community through a new body of carved Kaurna objects within Southern Kaurna landscape imagery. Tylor’s work challenges racial stereotypes and seeks to give proper recognition to Kaurna culture, signalling the revival of Kaurna cultural arts in a contemporary context.

Furthermore, “Walka Waltja Nganampa: These are our own designs” presents ceramics and textiles that fortify Anangu artists’ connection to their homelands. Senior Anangu cultural leaders and emerging artists share their inspiring stories through intricate marks adorning their works, combining traditional narratives with new techniques, thus pushing the boundaries of their art while honouring their heritage.

These exhibitions at JamFactory are part of the wider 2023 Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, showcasing the gallery’s active participation in celebrating and promoting Aboriginal art. The gallery acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, ensuring their cultural heritage remains integral to its operations and community engagement.
