About

The Flinders University Museum of Art (FUMA) is an esteemed institution located at Flinders University’s Bedford Park campus. It was established in 1978 and is known for its diverse collection and its role in the academic community. Originally focused on European master prints, the museum quickly expanded its collection to include works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and other indigenous peoples, reflecting the university’s pioneering approach to incorporating Aboriginal art into its curriculum.

In the early 1980s, FUMA began actively acquiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. This initiative placed FUMA at the forefront of collecting and promoting Indigenous art. The museum’s collection, includes national treasures such as Papunya early boards, Utopia works from the Rodney Gooch Collection and the Ernabella Arts Archive, all representing regions of Australian Indigenous art.

FUMA’s engagement with Indigenous art extends beyond its collection. From 1979 to 1992, the museum hosted an Artist in Residence Program, which supported Indigenous artists from diverse backgrounds. The works produced during these residencies, which were purchased at prices set by the artists themselves, significantly contributed to the development of FUMA’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collection and provided substantial encouragement to Indigenous arts practice.

Currently, FUMA continues to showcase historical and contemporary works by Australian and international artists. Its exhibitions frequently feature Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and curators, as part of its changing program. One notable current exhibition is “mane djang karirra: the place where the dreaming changed shape”, presented in association with the Tarnanthi Festival, which celebrates contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. This exhibition is a testament to FUMA’s continued commitment to presenting and engaging with Indigenous art and culture.

In summary, the Flinders University Museum of Art is a vital cultural institution that not only preserves and exhibits an impressive collection of Australian Indigenous art but also actively contributes to the cultural discourse and academic study of these works. Its long history of support and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, through acquisitions and special programs, positions it as a key player in the Australian art scene. The museum’s current and past exhibitions reflect its ongoing dedication to showcasing the richness and diversity of Indigenous artistry, ensuring that the stories and traditions embodied in these works continue to be shared and celebrated.
