About

The Australian Museum in Sydney is renowned for its extensive and significant collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, representing the diverse First Nations communities across Australia.

One notable aspect of the museum’s collection is its focus on “Ghost net art.” This unique art form, uses discarded fishing nets to create sculptures that tell traditional stories. These pieces highlight the creative resilience of these communities and their deep connection to the environment and cultural storytelling.

The museum also hosted “GADI,” an award-winning exhibition developed in partnership with local Aboriginal Elders and communities. “GADI” showcased the culture and history of the Country now known as Sydney City, featuring rare objects, new cultural material made by Gadigal Elders, stories, film, songs, and archaeological pieces. This exhibition exemplified the museum’s dedication to celebrating and preserving the diverse and vibrant cultures of Australia’s First Nations peoples.

Through these exhibitions and its ongoing efforts, the Australian Museum not only preserves and showcases Indigenous Australian art but also actively participates in cultural preservation and education. This approach makes the museum a vital institution for both understanding and appreciating the rich, complex tapestry of Australia’s Indigenous heritage.
