The Menil Collection

About

The Menil Collection in Houston is renowned for its extensive and diverse range of art, offering a spectrum of works from antiquity to modern and contemporary pieces. The collection, founded by John and Dominique de Menil, is housed in a building designed by Renzo Piano, and is recognized for its presentation of art in serene, naturally lit spaces. The museum’s long-term reputation is bolstered by its holdings of Surrealist and modern European paintings, African and Byzantine art, as well as works by prominent modern and contemporary artists.

The Menil Collection has showcased significant Australian Aboriginal art exhibitions such as “Mapa Wiya (Your Map’s Not Needed): Australian Aboriginal Art from the Fondation Opale.” This exhibition, which ran from September 13, 2019, to February 2, 2020, presented over 100 contemporary works, including paintings, shields, hollow log coffins, and engraved mother of pearl, highlighting the rich visual expression of Aboriginal artists and the profound connection to their ancestral lands. The exhibition featured internationally recognized artists like Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and John Mawurndjul, among others.

Complementing its exhibitions, the Menil hosted an event with anthropologists Howard and Frances Morphy discussing the mapping of Indigenous Australian culture and language. This event aligned with the exhibition by exploring the representation of space and place in Aboriginal art, furthering the understanding of the deep connection Aboriginal peoples have with their land. The combination of exhibitions like “Mapa Wiya” and scholarly discussions serves to deepen the public’s appreciation of Indigenous cultures and their artistic expressions at the Menil Collection

The Menil Collection’s commitment to offering diverse and culturally significant exhibitions such as the Aboriginal Art collection from the Fondation Opale underlines its dedication to global arts and its continuous effort to present art in a context that fosters understanding and dialogue.
