Vistas

Vistas is a seasonal survey exhibition bringing together artists whose works are represented in the collection at Japingka Gallery. Featuring both celebrated masters and exciting contemporary voices, the exhibition offers a broad overview of the diversity, vitality, and continuing evolution of Aboriginal art.

Among the major artists represented are Dorothy Napangardi, George Hairbrush Tjungurrayi, Yukultji Napangati, Lily Kelly Napangardi, Abie Loy Kemarre, and Walala Tjapaltjarri. Their works are shown alongside outstanding recent paintings by artists including Jackie Wirramanda, Samantha Daniels Napaltjarri, Sarrita King, Janice Stanley, Karen Bird Ngale, and Esther Bruno Nangala, creating a dialogue between established and emerging generations.

The title Vistas refers to both a beautiful, expansive view of the landscape and a broader outlook on future possibilities. This dual meaning resonates strongly with the artists represented, whose works are deeply connected to Country while continuing to explore new artistic directions. Through colour, pattern, memory, and story, these paintings offer unique perspectives on place and cultural identity.

As acclaimed Warlpiri artist Dorothy Napangardi reflected:

“While I’m doing my painting, I always have my family in mind. We went back to see my country. We’re going back soon, for more singing, making our Jukurrpa, my country.”

Her words capture the enduring connection to Country that underpins many of the works in this exhibition.

Featuring more than thirty artists, Vistas presents a rich and varied selection of paintings drawn from across the desert regions and beyond. The exhibition will be on view at Japingka Gallery until 7 September 2026.
