Three Wise Men
Troy Drill, Dwayne Jessell & Jonathon Malgil
Warmun art centre in the East Kimberley nurtures Gija culture, story-telling and oral history. It has maintained strong connections to ceremonial practices and uses ochre pigments in most of the artists’ works, to reflect its close ties to ceremonial body painting traditions. Artists maintain equally close ties to location and landscape, which have dominated the stories and imagery seen in the paintings.
Within these strong traditions younger members of the community are finding their own way into cultural representation, expressing themselves in new and distinctive ways. Three of the younger generation of men are artists Troy Drill, Dwayne Jessell and Jonathon Malgil. The artists use ochre pigments while finding new ways to deploy this ancient material. The exhibition is presented in association with Warmun Arts and is on display at Japingka from 23 May to 18 July 2025.
