Summer Matthews is a highly skilled glass artist working in the Murray River district near Albury- Wadonga. Summer has been developing and refining her skills in working hot glass at her studios since 2000. Summer Matthews has also worked with a number of other exciting Aboriginal artists creating glass works, including Rachel Malthouse, Sam Jupurrula and Robert Murray.

Summer Matthews was born in 1980, and is a Barkindji woman of the Eagle Hawk skin group. Summer draws on her Aboriginal heritage to create images of her family’s country along the Darling River, and sites around Mt Manara, where the Rainbow Serpent Ngatji emerges from the ground to create the form of the country, moving between waterholes and along watercourses.

Summer Matthews has made regular trips to Menindee to revisit the country, and connect to community and friends.

Summer Matthews has held solo exhibitions of her hand crafted glass works at Japingka Gallery in 2010 and contributed to several group exhibitions in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Summer Sanders has also created glass works for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, for the Australian Prime Minister’s Office and the New Zealand Parliament.
