Tiwi artist Maria Josette Orsto was born at Pularumpi on Melville Island in 1962. She started painting as a young girl, taught by her father, ceremonial leader Declan Apuatimi. In her father’s later years, Josette participated in and completed much of his work. Her mother was the acclaimed artist Jean Baptiste Apuatimi. Maria Josette Orsto has gone on to become a prolific carver, painter, batik and print artist.

Maria Josette Orsto now lives in Nguiu, Bathurst Island and was one of the first female artists to become a member of Tiwi Design. She was also the first Tiwi woman to hold a solo exhibition, in 1990.

Maria Josette Orsto says of her art practice: “I find more life in doing art work. My father, Declan Apuatimi, taught me to paint and carve. I am happy that I became an artist. My designs are growing stronger. I am always building up new designs in my head – sometimes I combine old Tiwi designs with my new ones.”

Maria Josette Orsto is represented in major collections including National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Australian Museum, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Art Gallery of Queensland, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Australian Embassy Paris, Holmes à Court Collection Perth, Seattle Art Museum and Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection.
