Karen Bird Ngale

Karen Bird Ngale is an Anmatyerre artist, born 1984 on the Utopia Homelands in Central Australia at Akaye Soakage, also called Mulga Bore. Karen is the daughter of Lindsay Bird Mpetyane who was one of the early Utopia painters. Karen’s traditional country on her father’s side, is Aremela, south of Mulga Bore. Karen’s aunt is Ada Bird Petyarre who was one of the most significant early women elder painters at Utopia.

Along with the other younger women, Karen was taught by the senior women the stories, songs and dances associated with ceremonies. In turn they learned what themes they are permitted to paint. One of Karen’s main Dreamtime stories is of the Alpar Seed story, related to the Rat-tail plant. In traditional life the women would collect the seed from the Alpar plant, crush it and use it in making damper or bread. On her father’s side, Karen has a number of other Dreaming stories that she can paint including Honey Ant and Bush Plum stories. Karen has been painting for twenty years and has absorbed the cultural and stylistic traits of the Utopia artistic tradition.
