Bush Garden - Artists of Ampilatwatja
19 July – 20 August 2019
Welcome to the beautiful observations of Country as the artists of Ampilatwatja show you their homelands, with all the bush medicine plants and types of native flora found there. The artists of this small community north-east from Alice Springs have developed their own style to represent country and all the resources that exist there. The title ‘ Bush Garden’ indicates the way people view the land as a resource to be nurtured and managed.
With associations of a niave style, the paintings take a high vantage point to look down on the lands, sometimes seeing through multiple horizon lines into the distance. The colours enliven the bush and bring everything into intense scrutiny and contrast. Minute details of plants and geology are recorded and we see how the bush is divided into diverse areas through the types of plants and rocks that dominate these micro climates.
Artists include Julieanne Ngwarraye Morton, Jessie Ngwarraye Ross, Rosie Kemarre Morton, Kindy Kemarre Ross, Lilly Kemarre Morton and Sandra Pula Teece.
