Blue Hues

While Aboriginal art is often thought of as specialising in the colours of the earth and the tones of ochres, many artists have sought colour more broadly to gave their stories meaning. The use of blues has obvious connections to the sky and to water and artists often use blues to convey the connections to the elements. While some artists from the tropical northern regions use blue in images of the rainy season and of the ocean, desert artists also use the colour consistently. In Water Dreaming stories, stars and night skies, lightning and summer rain references, blue is a regular feature of these designs. This collection draws together paintings from a wide range of artists whose work reflects these general ideas.
