Sonya Edney - Recent Paintings

Sonya Edney returns with her third solo exhibition at Japingka Gallery, showing Recent Paintings of the Gascoyne region. The artist’s work shows the open spinifex country of the upper Gascoyne area and the effects of the seasons at play on the landscape. Her work displays wildflowers coming into bloom after rains, the flood plains of the Gascoyne River and the secluded waterholes protected by trees and shrubs.

The artist has become well known for her representations of the night skies, the Seven Sisters story and the image of Yalibirri, the Emu in the Sky. Sonya states: “When we were younger, we used to go out bush and we camped out under the stars. My nanna told us kids about the sky stories, about the stars. It was so beautiful sleeping out under the desert sky because all you could see were the stars that lit up the Milky Way in the night sky and the dark patches within it.” The exhibition is on display at Japingka Gallery until 29 March 2022.
