Turbo Brown Exhibition
Gallery 2 Exhibition
19 February - 30 March, 2016
Trevor Turbo Brown paints with directness, energy and focus – his subject is the outdoor world of birds and animals. He explains that this relates to a time when he was homeless, living in Mildura on the banks of the Murray River, at a time the animals were his singular friends.
Turbo Brown was born in Mildura in 1967, and had a keen knowledge of the area around the Murray River in north western Victoria. His childhood was a great struggle for him, he was born with an intellectual disability and spent much of this time as a homeless youth. Following a difficult teenage life bordering on alcohol abuse and crime offending, Turbo Brown was adopted by Herb and Bunta Batten.
Life slowly began to improve, and Turbo Brown moved to Melbourne with his adopted family and discovered a talent for painting. His capacity to visualise stories that he held in his memory gave him a vast store of subject ideas. The colourful and joyous paintings of Turbo Brown are on display at Japingka Gallery from 19 February until 30 March 2016.
